Tyrone-based specialist expands with £33m contracts in Britain & Ireland

Co Tyrone offsite construction specialist Western Building Systems has secured more than £30 million worth of contracts during the first three months of this year across the healthcare, residential and education sectors.

The strong start follows a 48% rise in sales for the year to April 2025, with turnover climbing from £27.64 million to £40.86 million. Pre-tax profits also increased significantly, rising from £1.9 million to more than £3 million.

The latest accounts also show the company’s financial position continuing to strengthen. Retained earnings rose to £14.22 million, up from £11.98 million in 2024, while shareholders’ funds increased from £12 million to £14.26 million by the end of April 2025.

During the opening quarter of the year, the Coalisland-based business secured around £20 million in healthcare projects and a further £13 million in housing work, underlining continued momentum across both public and private sector developments. Healthcare continues to make up a major part of the company’s workload, reflecting ongoing investment in acute and community healthcare facilities.

Education projects also contributed to growth in the first quarter, with £5 million in new contracts awarded. Among them is a post-primary dual campus development at the former St Ronan’s School site in Lurgan, adding to the company’s growing education portfolio.

The early success this year follows a period of investment in production capacity, automation and sustainability initiatives. This has included expanded warehousing facilities, automated timber panel manufacturing and the use of low-carbon construction technologies in line with modern methods of construction.

Operational performance has also been strengthened through the introduction of an integrated digital management platform, giving the company improved oversight of forecasting, production planning, pipeline management and ESG reporting. The system has enhanced coordination and visibility across projects.

The company said growing demand in the education sector reflects the need for faster delivery times and greater cost certainty, while its healthcare expertise continues to support projects delivered within live operational environments. Recent modular healthcare schemes at Upton Hospital in Slough and Colchester Hospital demonstrate ongoing involvement in large-scale clinical developments, alongside investment in workforce development and regional supply chains.

With a forward order book stretching into 2026 and 2027, the company said current trading conditions remain stable despite wider pressures facing the construction industry, including rising costs, labour shortages and tightening margins.
