Project Overview:

We are one of the leading offsite contractors, founded to deliver offsite projects in a better way. We have an excellent delivery track record and regularly exceed the performance of top tier main contractors. Mid Group is one of the most productive contractors in the UK, with a turnover of over £1m per employee, more than double most contractors. We engage with a number of offsite solutions, ensuring our clients receive the best product for their project.

Mid Group has delivered several schools for the London Borough of Barking and Dagenham (LBBD); stepping up to deliver where other contractors have failed to hit the required budgets or programmes. By adopting offsite solutions in place of traditional solutions, we have enabled projects, that had previously stalled, to move forward. Our use of offsite solutions has genuinely helped schools to become more affordable for the borough. Most recently we completed the third phase of works at Barking’s Greatfields School; Phase 2b, where we delivered continuous improvement on the first phases, at no extra cost, by working in conjunction with the whole team. We  completed Phase 2b in 81 weeks, which was 3 months ahead of our contract programme.

This was achieved by the use of vibro stone columns, which were installed very quickly and saved approximately 5 weeks as compared to piles. Additionally, the SIPs floor system saved approximately 5 weeks. The project was delivered using just 16 manufactured components, which were used repetitively throughout to achieve economies of scale, increased efficiency in installation, and reduce the cost of, and simplify, maintenance.

Each component was BIM modelled by our Sterling BIM team, with full cost, programme and lifecycle data all supplied The use of exposed pre-cast concrete soffits allows the thermal mass to assist in heating and cooling the building and allows the windows of the building to reach the full height of the soffit, improving natural daylight and reducing reliance on artificial lighting.

Greatfields 2a delivered net nil carbon and an improvement in building emission rates from 9.62 kgCO2/ m2/yr on Zone 1 to an outstanding 5.55 kgCO2/m2/yr. The school has an EPC score of 10 and an improvement in energy usage from 73.15/m2/yr to 55.24/m2/yr, with a 27% saving against anticipated rates.
