A major healthcare redevelopment project in Bradford has been granted £65 million in business case approval by the Department of Health and Social Care, marking a major step forward in plans to improve mental health facilities at Lynfield Mount Hospital.

The redevelopment will involve both refurbishment and new-build works, including upgrades to existing wards and the addition of a new two-storey extension. Designed by P+HS Architects, the project will be delivered by offsite construction specialist McAvoy.

A key part of the scheme includes refurbishing bedrooms across two wards, with the introduction of en-suite facilities to enhance patient comfort and privacy. In addition, the new modular extension will increase capacity while providing modern clinical spaces designed to meet current healthcare standards.

The plans have been developed through close collaboration with service users, as well as clinical and estates teams from Bradford District Care NHS Foundation Trust. Particular focus has been given to creating a therapeutic setting, with improved natural light, better views and stronger links to outdoor areas. Inside, the layout has been designed to promote easy navigation, a sense of calm and a supportive environment for patients and staff alike.

Offsite construction is expected to be instrumental in speeding up the programme, minimising disruption during works and maintaining high build quality. Modular construction methods are becoming increasingly common across healthcare and public sector developments, especially where rapid delivery, efficiency and consistency are essential.

Therese Patten, chief executive of the Trust, described the approval as a major milestone, enabling the project to move forward into delivery. She noted that the redevelopment will significantly enhance the quality of care and environment for patients relying on the facility.
