Enhancing 3D Volumetric Modular Design

Welser Profile supplies custom roll formed steel profiles to a huge range of industries,
all of which demand cost efficient, tightly toleranced and highly repeatable steel
profiles to lower their own production costs.

HAVING SPENT many years expanding the boundaries of what is possible, Welser uses its advanced roll-forming technology to add value to its customers, offering complex profiles that are often thought impossible to produce. Welser is happy to work with its customers to optimise their ideas for maximum cost efficiency. The opening of design freedom away from basic roll formed shapes helps module designers innovate, differentiate and reduce costs.

Whilst the laws of physics cannot be ignored, advanced roll forming can seem to defy them. For example, tight process control can eliminate the expected end splay of a cut profile, so that the profiles fit more cleanly into the module – no more hammering the end of a profile to make the floor sit flat properly.

Steel profiles, cold rolled from higher strength steels (up to 1700MPa yield anyone?) and up to 8mm thick can change how module designers size their frames. A smaller cross-section can now deliver the required stiffness and strength, freeing up valuable space inside the module. This can also help increase module ‘stackability’. Improved steel grades can also potentially be used to thin profiles where weight and space may be an issue.

Overall, cold roll forming allows more accurate profiles than hot rolling, as well as ensuring mechanical properties are maintained. Highly accurate cutting across a large end face, pre-stressing of the beams, super accurate punching and length control are all required to simplify the life of a 3D volumetric module builder.

Further downstream processing of profiles can add another dimension to module build speed, with additions like profile bending, laser worked end forms and even welding one profile to another along their lengths all working to create a plug and play part to reduce build time and complexity.

Welser Profile is a 362-year-old family-lead company, a pioneer in the development of bespoke cold roll formed profiles across a range of materials, markets and applications. With 2500 employees across production plants in Austria, Germany and the USA, Welser Profile has a loyal global customer base. The images on this page show examples of Welser produced profiles from different industries, to highlight a little of what advanced roll forming can offer.
