The CHP link designed, built and installed into Birmingham New Street station by NG Bailey Offsite Manufacture, is part of the wider £750m redevelopment of one of the UK's busiest rail interchanges, which sees some 170,000 daily commuters pass through a station that was originally built in the 1960s to accommodate only 60,000 people per day. The revamped station is now around three times its previous size and has been purposefully designed to service Britain's second city for another generation.
Having already demonstrated expertise and excellence for an award winning installation of an innovative service spine at the heart of the new station, NG Bailey Offsite Manufacture devised a solution for the new CHP link to meet the increase in energy demands of the new station, which could be successfully manufactured externally and installed in the station with no disruption to daily operations and with maximum green impact. This offsite solution was delivered within a tight timeframe of nine months, by reducing on-site operatives by 75% and with an impeccable safety record of zero RIDDORS, which resulted in two gold ROSPA awards.
The new CHP link is a ground-breaking green initiative literally right at the very heart of the station, taking waste heat from the station's engine and re-distributing it to supply heat to offices and other commercial buildings in the City, including a new John Lewis building in Grand Central shopping arcade and Birmingham Children's Hospital. A key initiative of the solution created by NG Bailey was to create a link between the northern and southern district heating loops of the city through the station itself, which previously had been isolated from each other. The CHP link would enable excess energy to be exported to the Birmingham District Energy Scheme, owned and operated by Cofely, which would now complete a much more energy efficient and effective circle of power and heating across the whole of the city.
